Cholestasis occurs due to reduced synthesis of bile acids or the deficient (intra or extra-hepatic) excretion of biliary components (cholesterol, phospholipids, bile salts, bilirubin and proteins) to the small intestine. Newborns, especially preterm-born children, have a predisposition to neonatal cholestasis because of hepatic immaturity. This condition can generate systemic problems, such as choluria, acholia, hypercholesterolemia and hyperbilirubinemia.(1,2) It can also change the structural composition or thickness of the mineralized dental tissues, enamel and dentine, leading to intrinsic chromatic changes due to hyperbilirubinemia (concentration of total bilirubin in blood serum higher

Background: Neonatal cholestasis is an important disease of the liver and biliary ducts in infancy. In neglected cases, the disease has irreversible complications. Idiopathic neonatal hepatitis, biliary atresia, TORCH infections and choledochal cyst are important causes of neonatal cholestasis. The aim of this study was to determine the causes of cholestasis among neonates admitted to the Child...
متن کاملNeonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency in two Malaysian siblings: outcome at one year of life.
We report two Malaysian siblings with neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency (NICCD). The younger sibling, a six-month-old Chinese girl, presented with prolonged neonatal jaundice, and was investigated for biliary atresia. Urine metabolic screen showed the presence of urinary-reducing sugars, and she was treated with a lactose-free formula. NICCD was suspected based on th...

Cholestasis caused by the excessive accumulation of bile within the liver, due to intrinsic or extrinsic factors. Cholestasis side effects are associated directly or indirectly with the reduction of bile flow and the confinement of materials related to bile secretion (such as bile acids, bilirubin, and cholesterol). On the other hand, some factors such as opioids, alkaline phosphatase, endotoxi...
متن کاملNeonatal Intrahepatic Cholestasis Caused by Citrin Deficiency in Korean Infants
Citrin is a liver-type mitochondrial aspartate-glutamate carrier encoded by the SLC25A13 gene, and its deficiency causes adult-onset type II citrullinemia and neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency (NICCD). Here, the authors investigated clinical findings in Korean infants with NICCD and performed mutation analysis on the SLC25A13 gene. Of 47 patients with neonatal choles...
متن کاملHemorrhagic Diathesis as the Presenting Symptom of Neonatal Cholestasis
A 4-week-old infant presented with a coagulation disorder resulting from a vitamin K deficiency. The vitamin K deficiency was caused by neonatal cholestasis due to biliary atresia. Jaundice, hepatomegaly and pale stools are the predominant presenting symptoms of biliary atresia, none of which were recognized in our patient before admission. However, the patient presented with bleeding caused by...
